and afghanistan. serious news tonight on afghanistan, as mitt romney committed without any qualification to the idea that troops should be withdrawn from afghanistan in 2014. this is a reversal for mitt romney, in terms of his previous stated conditions on that idea. he previously said i don't think you set hard and fast deadlines. that was to abc news on july 29th. i think the biggest mistake he, meaning president obama has made in afghanistan was announcing the specific date that he would withdraw. he said this president has done an extraordinary thing he announced the date of our withdrawal. that was wrong. mr. romney today just flat out reversing his previous rejection to there being a withdrawal date from afghanistan, as he very tightly hugged president obama on everything from drones to egypt to syria to a number of other matters tonight on which there was less disagreement than we might have expected before the debate. chris matthews? what's your take? >> let me take my favorite role for a minute, my role of critic. you think about the united states. let's talk about our country i

: i don't think it was a coincidence that during the foreign policy debate, mitt romney kept bringing it back to the economy. most people turning in were not going to be paying that close attention to some of the foreign policy issues, and i don't think many \ voters go to the polls to vote based on what our decisions will be with china or cuba, for that matter. but they do vote with their pocketbooks. statewide unemployment in florida is 8.7%, but it is much higher in various pockets of florida. in some counties, as high as 12% unemployment. as we all know, that does not talk about the under-employed. the economy is still struggling in florida. we have signs of it getting better, but i heard a story that foreclosures in the state are the highest in the nation. there's a lot of economic pressure in the state. people are feeling the pain, and whoever sells the economic message best is going to do well in this state. i should add that the republican party in the state is very strong. >> they not only have the governor's office and three cabinet offices, but the state democratic party is

this polling was conducted after the third and final debate. >> and if there was any doubt about romney's momentum, look at what happened in virginia. a new fox news poll shows romney now leading by two points. last month the same poll had obama up seven. and in the abc/"washington post" daily tracking poll of likely voters, romney has taken a three-point lead, 50%-47%. on monday, the president was leading 49%-48%. and on the economy when asked who voters trust more on that issue, romney now has a sizeable nine-point lead. >> so you look at these national polls, mika, abc news/"washington post" poll showing a four-point lead in the national poll. this week. a four-point swing in the national poll. gallup, of course, has had mitt romney ahead i think way too much over the past week or two. sometimes five, six points. and in the national poll, it really does seem -- if you take all the polls, it really does seem like mitt romney is moving away from barack obama. and yet you go to these swing states, nevada, holding steady for barack obama. colorado, still deadlocked. virginia, slightly go
